All I want for christmas...

  • 24th Dec, 2009 at 1:51 AM

I think I got my christmas present from the universe early this year. I got a new friend. Now I won't ask for anything more^^

Holidays will be spent with my parents, brothers and grandmother at home, untill I leave next monday for Hamar and Andy. Newyear's eve is set for Tønsberg. Can't wait, this will be a wonderful christmas!

Happy holidays! Seasonal greetings! Saffron salute!
-M.

PS: The "Love" series will continue in January, unless I suddenly find myself with and idle (eric?) moment earlier.

Love, Part II and Concept Art

  • 9th Dec, 2009 at 2:26 PM

Hey
Today's post will be about two separate subjects. First off is the experimental "Love" series post (if you don't know what I'm talking about, read my previous journal entry), and second is a short post about the development of the main character for my Concept Art assignment. Here there be pictures, yarr!

Love, part II

I've thought a lot about what kind of things I'd suggest in these posts.

First off: I'll give two suggestions in each post, and keep going untill I run out of ideas. They ideas might not be new to everyone, but that is a good thing (for you).
Secondly: They might sometimes be specific for a certain kind of relation (i.e. someone you live with). I hope you'll forgive this.
And thirdly: The things I suggest should not take too much time or money, partly because we're in December and everybody's busy, but mainly because I feel it's important not to make too big a deal about these little gestures.

Breakfast
This one is for someone you live with, I'm afraid. It's phrased as one other person, but really, it could easily be more.
On a day when you both have time off, get up early (before the other person at least). Then make as wonderful a breakfast as you can with what you have available. It doesn't really matter if you have time to make waffles or anything, as long as you set a table. Also, it's important to make coffee or tea if the other person usually drinks this in the morning.

Then go wake them up and tell them you've made breakfast. If they are very heavy sleepers, you might start with waking them once as you get up, then do it again several times as you are preparing the breakfast. Enjoy your breakfast together^^

Important part: They did not ask for this breakfast, and so you should not ask them to do the dishes.

Forest walk
This is something you can do with anyone, but it helps if you don't live too far away from each other.
It's quite simple: Invite someone out for a walk in the forest. If you don't have a forest available, try finding the next best thing. Not too much noise. It's not supposed to be too tiring, so let the outing take between 30 min and an hour. Even if people are under a lot of stress, they can spare half an hour. It's even good for them to get out and take a break.

Those are the tips for today, hope you have enjoyed them. Please join me again in a week or so for the next installment :-)

Concept Art: The making of a main character )
That's all for now,
Untill next time I want you all to be good and study hard for your exams (if you've got them) ;-)
And don't let the christmas madness get you down^^

Love

  • 28th Nov, 2009 at 9:29 PM

What is love?

Magazines and movies tell us constantly what love supposedly is. But are the expectations that countless articles feed us about ‘what he likes’ and ‘what you should do to get what you want in bed’ really realistic? Or are they intentionally constructed to give us an idea about the perfect man or woman that no real human being can fulfill?

For if we are always expecting more, believing that we deserve someone who never do anything wrong, will we ever find lasting love?

I am certain that everyone, no matter if they have ever actually been in love, have an idea of what love is.

I do too.

Love, to me, is quite simple. It’s about doing something for someone else without any expectations of getting anything in return. Just to make them happy. Nothing else.

The world would be a better place if we all stopped once in a while, just for a moment, and thought about what we could do for someone we loved.

I would like to write a series of posts about things that we can do for people we care about, be it friends, family or lovers. If you, my dear reader, are not partial to such writings I would advise you to stay clear for a couple of weeks. I don’t want to force anything on anyone; I just want to spread some positivity^^

As for the rest of you, I hope you will enjoy this experiment of mine.

A strange problem

  • 25th Nov, 2009 at 8:52 PM

Since my last post some things have happened.

My intuition last time about something going on was right, but nothing is resolved yet. But things are looking good^^

The situation that has led to today's post is of a different nature, and the question I ask myself now is: Does love conquer all?

A dear friend of mine fell in love recently, but now it turns out that something that should have been a wonderful and simple, natural thing has become a problem. Or, it will be unless something is done.

The problem is that they have different religious views, but in order to be together he has to give up his beliefs completely and convert to hers. Can one consciously decide to change their way of life and what they believe in? Is it possible when it is to save a relationship?

I am not unfeeling, I know what it's like to be in love (I still am!), but I can't see how this can work. But I don't know what to tell my friend when he asks for advice. I don't want to lose this friendship, but I don't want to see him get hurt either.

Any views on this, any help at all, would be very much appreciated.

Intermission

  • 19th Nov, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Hey guys!

Just a small post.

I've been wanting to write for a long time, but there's been so much going on, and I haven't known where to begin.

You know how a good thing takes time, but great things happen really fast? It's a quote I heard years ago and it's stuck with me even though I can't remember who said it. Well, I'm not certain, but I have a hunch that something great might just be about to happen. Can't say any more about it, I'm scared I'll jinx it.

In other news: The comic collection where the story I drew this summer is featured is now in stores. Well, at least I've seen it in Oslo. Go get your free copy! There are seven stories is all, and some are really really amazing!

Next post will come when I know more and when I have once again regained my normal pulse. Which may not be for a couple of days.

Hope you are all well, I do read posts even if I don't comment :)

A beef with Oprah

  • 13th Oct, 2009 at 11:14 AM

Oh, come on!
We've all thought about it sometimes. How watching Oprah makes us feel worse about ourselves.

Actually, I enjoy watching it from time to time. She's a wonderful person and host and the subjects are often interesting (and dare I mention: controversial!).

But today she had one of those shows where she presents the world's smartest and most talented kids. I watch these tiny prodigies (correct plural form?) and can't help but to feel like a complete failure. They are half my age and have already become more successful than I can ever hope to be! What have I accomplished thus far in my life? Let's make a list.

- I've made a comic.

That's a terribly short list. Let's add some more even if it's not that impressive:

- I've got a nice and clean permanent record.
- I've managed to not lose any body parts (fingers, toes etc.).
- I've (so far) successfully evaded swine flu.

Ah, that's more like it! I feel loads better now.

Look at that list and tremble, wünderknaben! Let's see if you can match that when you're my age!

And to finish this short entry with a drawing, here's one of me, done to celebrate my surpassing 8000 pageviews on dA!

(I wanted to go for the whole "Marvel comic character" look, but I chickened out halfway through^^)

I know I promised you more sketches, but that'll have to wait. I've got an assignment that's due tomorrow and we've got a lot left to do.
Untill then, hope you are all well,
-M.

I can haz abs?

  • 28th Sep, 2009 at 9:11 PM

Holy crap, I have a six pack!

Where did this come from!? The exercise santa!? It wasn't there a week ago, honestly! I haven't been this fit since I was 17!

Am seriously surprised and amazed. Must go and drink tea to regain composure...

Next post will be within a week, I think. Expect more sketchbook sketches (see the what happened to Miguel's boxer shorts!).

Be well,
-M.

I realised I haven't really shared what's going on in my life now, so I thought I'd give you a small update (with pictures!) and some sketchbook sketches (does this mean MORE pictures!?).

So sit back and enjoy the ride. Please keep arms and legs withing the boundaries of reality and refrain from cursing at the screen (after all, what has it done to you?)

Prize money away! )
Sketches (run away, run away!) )

That's all for now, hope you enjoyed the show!

Busy start

  • 15th Sep, 2009 at 10:25 AM

All right.

A lot has been happening since my last post! I've finally settled in at Hamar (getting into routines and eating proper food and stuff). I've made a lot of new friends (including a couple of our foreign exchange students), and am currently enjoying my newly made reputation as an accomplished cook^^

I'm updating "Wings" again, and I'm continuing the work on my sketchbook when I've got five minutes to spare.

We've started our new subjects at school; in addition to our pilot project we've got Interactive 3D design 2 and Concept art 2.

In my last post I promised you some "before and after" pictures showing my student dorm room. And here they are!

Le pictures! )
That's all for now, I'm off to pick up some laundry! Next post will be sometime next week, probably, and will contain various sketches of random silliness^^
Catch you later,
-M.

PS: Am loving the results of the election and can breathe a sigh of relief :D

Aftermath

  • 27th Aug, 2009 at 9:42 PM

So I won the comic contest.

Actually, I was one of several winners, but either way I'm thrilled!

They notified me with an email, which I read, then re-read and read quite slowly a third time before I squealed and started jumping up and down before running around and telling people.

Interesting fact: Extreme excitement and happiness may result in nausea.

And now that I've sent my hi-res (high resolution) files it is officially out of my hands and there is nothing else I can do. Now I'm just starting to feel slightly terrified at the thought of A LOT of people reading my very private comic.

Am now thinking of whether or not I can now officially claim to be a "comic artist". Any views on this, people?

For those of you who have been wondering: The winners' comics will be printed as an anthology which (if I understood correctly) will be given away to customers free of charge.

And please note that the characters featured in my comic are fictional.

I'm currently staying at Andy's and will spend my weekend with him. Next post will be up sometime next week, and will cover the amazing transformation of my new flat/ apartment/ dorm room (with pictures)! This post was actually due this week, but with the surprising news about the contest I postponed it^^ In the near future I will also be doing some "sketch dump" posts as I've been scanning pages of my lovely sketch book and feel like sharing the random silliness.

Thanks for all the support and well-wishes about my comic!
-M.

Home?

  • 16th Aug, 2009 at 11:30 PM

I'm back in Hamar again.

After a terrific party on the 8th, I drove south with my mum on the 9th. The first half of the trip consisted of her taunting me about being fantastically hung over. Yeah yeah, I'm not a saint. I sometimes do very stupid things....I learned my lesson, mum.

Then I got to Hamar and had a cup of tea at Ken and Sue's. Well, actually I had a cup of tea and a bottle of wine, but nevermind the details! I postponed the task of unpacking my stuff untill the day after. I tried to unpack, got bored and did other stuff. Like make cupcakes and dinner with Ken and Sue!

Then I left for Oslo.

In retrospect this plan had so many flaws I never should have gone through with it, but I was trying to be spontanious (for once)!

I left my apartment in a horrific state and didn't come back for 4 days, and I only came back then 'cause I remembered I had to pay my rent. Honestly, I don't know where my head has been recently.

I got Andy to come back to Hamar with me for the weekend and he helped me with the unpacking process. He also chided me to do it properly while I was at it so I wouldn't have to redo it again later. Bless him.

But he left today, and I've cooked dinner alone for the first time in months. It will take som getting used to, I fear. But the worst thing is staring around at my new room. I really don't know what I'm doing here! I suppose I'll spend the next few days avoiding it as much as possible.

So, um, this ended up being a longer (and more morbid) post than I expected. I suppose I thought I needed to share this. Or at least explain why I haven't been around lately, and probably won't be for a little while.

Untill we meet again,
-M.

PS: The result of the comic contest is due at the end of the month.

Done!

  • 1st Aug, 2009 at 11:13 PM

I finished the 10 page comic last night and sent it in!

I felt relieved to finally call it done, but there are so many things that I'm not satisfied with. Oh well, I suppose it will always be like that. At least now I can claim that the style of the comic is kind of an "aquired taste" (if you've read it, or will read it in the future, you'll know what I mean). And I have no expectations to win the contest as the comic is too girly and without action scenes^^

This is actually the first comic I've ever finished (that I can remember). I think I'll try to make another short one soon as it was immensely fun. Also, I learned A LOT.

I'm planning to publish the next page of "Wings" tomorrow...or the day after. We'll see.

Good night to you all,
-M.

Finale

  • 31st Jul, 2009 at 12:50 PM

I'm running late with my comic, I'm only half done with the tones, and I'm supposed to send it in tonight! Eeeeek!

Current inspirational music keeping me from breaking down: Metal Gear Saga

Unwinded a few days ago with drawing another random hunk. This one ended up looking a bit like Draco Malfoy, so I just went with it^^ Maybe it's his cousin -whom he'll be destined to marry to keep the pureness of the family blood intact..?

(Anatomy? Strange word...I've never heard of it!)

Next post: Tomorrow!
Closely followed by a fresh page of "Wings"

Cheers,
-M.

Busy...?

  • 15th Jul, 2009 at 8:58 PM

Hi.

Trying to make a comic is surprisingly hard work...I still haven't got the hang of it ("Damn you, Salazar!"). Any pointers on how to do it will be much appreciated.

(This is usually how I spend the days when I suddenly find myself all alone. Mmmmmm...tea....)

Am currently listening to Neil Gaiman reading "The graveyard book". (You can too, here!) That man seems to be brimming with awesome!

17 days remaining...

-M.

Hello and good evening!

Today's topis are many and varied. Bonus brownie points to those who read it all! More time to eat brownies for those who skip the boring parts!

At least I've had the decency to put stuff behind cuts this time, eh?

Update VISA )

Injured foot )

Transformers 2 (not a real review, contains very very slight spoilers) )

Andy's coming! )

So, that's the end of another long post. Next one will be perhaps within a week, it depends on how busy I am.
Cheerio!

Hey guys,
just a small update.

I called the bank today and locked/blocked/whatever-you-call-it-when-you-shut-it-down-from-further-use my VISA. So now I'll get a new one within two weeks! Yay!

And a quick thanks to [info]ladyfaithie who helped me with learning to use photobucket. So more random pictures to be expected in the future! To show you I'm serious about this, here's a random hunk. I draw far too many women^^

Good night and sleep tight, dear friends and readers!
